Back to Part 1
Next, the five members of SHINEe stepped on the elevating stage to perform "SHINee World" in rock-n-roll style. Because the space was so limited, one of the members almost fell off while they were dancing. Luckily, there were no injuries. Afterward, SHINee performed a special dance tribute to Michael Jackson, followed by "Love Like Oxygen." Jonghyun did his infamous Michael Jackson accent for the first verse of the song.
The performance that was most fun was Eunhyuk, Donghae, Shindong, and Leeteuk from Super Junior and f(x) performing "Oops." The lyrics are already fun to start with; adding on the comic-inspired stage background and the quirky, funky and mischievous nature of the four boys, even those who were not familiar with the song could find themselves dancing to the beat.
The three hosts reappeared to introduce a new section of the concert, where artists do cross collaborations. To start off, Onew (SHINee) and Luna (f(x)) appeared together, singing to High School Musical's "Can I Have This Dance," the first slow song of the night. At one point, Onew forgets to sing during second verse -- smiling awkwardly when he realizes his mistake -- but then he redeems himself later in the song, when Onew kneels in front of Luna, asking for her hand. By then, the crowd was screaming and cheering like there was no tomorrow.
Jessica (SNSD) and Krystal (f(x)), the sisters, were next to perform. They chose to take on a rendition of Katy Perry's "California Gurls," as they both grew up in San Francisco. Unfortunately, there's a mike problem, so Krystal's voice is barely heard, overshadowed by Jessica's.
Up next is Changmin (DBSK), who serenaded the audience with a cover of Bruno Mar's "Just The Way You Are." When he hit the chorus, Kyuhyun (Super Junior) came up to the stage to sing the second verse of the song. A girl sitting on a chair appeared onstage, as both Changmin and Kyuhyun serenade her. This girl was later revealed to be a fan in the audience who was chosen at random.
Donghae and Eunhyuk (Super Junior), dressed in colorful suits, then danced to "Oppa, Oppa," entertaining the fans with hip thrusts and fan-service hugs. Eunhyuk chants "I say Eunhyuk, you say Oppa. Eunhyuk!" to which the fans willingly shout back "Oppa!"
The most anticipated part of the concert was the debut of EXO, SM Entertainment’s new two-bands-in-one bilingual boy group, making their first appearance in the US. The first six members began with "History" in Chinese, showing us that it was EXO-M [Mandarin] performing. After the first verse and chorus, EXO-K [the Korean version of the group] took over the stage, performing the same song in Korean. Eventually, both groups merged together to finish off the song in Chinese, in what seemed to represent their two parallel universes conjoining.
SNSD's TaeTiSeo (Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun), then sang the latest song of their subgroup Twinkle. Dressed in sparkling dresses, these three girls lived up to the name of the song as well as the music video.
In the final collaborative song, Amber (f(x)), Key (SHINEe) and Kris (EXO) created their own interpretation of Far*East Movement's "Like A G6, " which brought the crowd to a new level of excitement: everyone singing along to one of the most popular songs last year.
Then, Super Junior performed "Sorry Sorry" and "ACHA" dressed in their signature black-white-grey suits.
When DBSK finally on, everybody seemed to have lost it. The duo started with "Maximum," followed by "Keep Your Head Down." It never fails to amaze me the level of energy and strength these two put into their dance moves, while simultaneously maintaining vocal excellence.
BoA, the queen of SM (and only individual artist in a lineup of group idols), opened up with "Look Who's Talking," and "Energetic," followed by "One Dream," with Kris and Key singing along. Key accompanies BoA for a flirtatious rendition of "I Did It For Love," before BoA ends with "Hurricane Venus."
The concert ends with all of the groups reappearing to perform their newests songs. f(x), dressed in flower print outfits, danced to "Pinocchio (Danger)." SHINee then sings to "Sherlock" which had the whole stadium shouting "I'm so curious!" SNSD then brings the boys out with "The Boys." Super Junior comes together to sing "Mr. Simple." (Dressed in geometrically organize LED light-adorned jackets, the groups wins the best outfit of the night.) And as the final act, DBSK, the “sunbae" of the groups, comes out to perform their legendary "Rising Sun."
To finish up the concert, all the artists made a final walk down the T-stage as they all sang to the SMTOWN finale song.
Enhanced with balloons, confetti and water fountain, the scene almost looks like one out of a fairy tale.
