Although the San Diego Asian Film Festival began in 2000, this is only the second year that the San Diego Asian Film Foundation has hosted their Spring Showcase of Asian Films. Giving festival-goers something to look forward to in April (the half-way point between the full festival, which takes place in the Fall), the San Diego Showcase may be smaller in quantity, but it's just as strong, in terms of the quality of films being shown.
The Opening Night film -- which plays tonight, Thursday, April 19 -- is the hit Korean feel-good blockbuster Sunny, directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol.
Other films screening include Johnnie To's Life WIthout Principle, the US premiere of Nobuhiro Yamashita's My Back Page, the West Coast premiere of Pen-ek Ratanaruang's Headshot, the award-winning Taiwanese film You Are the Apple of My Eye (directed by Giddens Ko), and Hirokazu Kore-eda's I Wish. The festival will conclude with the Hrithik Roshan-starrer, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
The San Diego Spring Showcase will take place at the Mission Valley UltraStar Theaters and run until April 26. For more information, go to their official website.
