Syed Haider Raza's Saurashtra
According to BBC, a painting by Indian artist Syed Haider Raza set a record for a modern Indian work when it sold for £2.4m ($3.5m) at Christie’s auction house in London on Thursday. The Indian museum that purchased the work paid well above the estimated price. Christie’s reports that the acrylic on canvas painting was sold by a private French collector who garnered the painting directly from the artist.
88 year-old Raza has lived and worked in France since 1950 and painted Saurashtra in 1983 as an “homage to his homeland.” Saurashtra combines elements of Raza’s childhood in India with his homeland’s cultural heritage.
